Set Up Filters for the Filtered List Paragraph
In order to create a Filtered List, you must first set up the filters you'd like your site visitors to use to interact with your content. The method used for creating filters on Stanford Sites allows for flexibility in naming and creating multiple filters based on your site content needs.
What is a filter?
Filters can help your site visitors navigate large volumes of content.
For the purpose of this guide, the filters are made up of Labels and Categories. Take the following example of a filter that allows site visitors to filter down to a particular academic quarter:
Quarter
Autumn
Winter
Spring
Summer
Selecting a filter will hide any content from your list that is not in the selected Category. Site visitors can choose more than one category to further reduce
In this example:
- "Quarter" is the Label.
- "Autumn," "Winter," "Spring," and "Summer" are each a Category.
Set up filters
To create the filters, you will set up a hierarchy where the first level represents the Labels and the second level represents the Categories.
This example uses OpportunitiesFilters.
To set up filters:
- Go to Structure>Taxonomy>Opportunity Filters.
- Click Add Term.
- Add a term you'd like to use for a Label (for example, "Quarter.") You do not need to add a description, parent term, or weight.
- Click Save. This will save your term and take you to the form to add another term.
- Add a term you'd like to use for Category (for example, "Autumn.") Select "Quarter" as the parent term before saving.
- Continue adding terms, as needed.
- Click Save and go to list when you are ready to see your filters.
When you are done, your list should look something like this:

Change the order of the filters
To change the order of the filters, use the handles to drag and drop your categories and labels into your preferred order and click Save.
Considerations
- These Labels and Categories may show up on the page display for your content. Check the individual content type for details.
Your questions answered
No. The filtered list only supports a single level of categories under each label.
Not at this time. If you need to create simple lists filtered by a category, use the Opportunity Type taxonomy.
Not at this time. If you need to retag content to match your filters to existing taxonomy, use the Manage Content view for that content type to bulk update your content.
