Exclude From Search

Main content start

Exclude from search does exactly what it promises. When you exclude a piece of content from search, it will not appear on your On-Site Search, and Stanford Sites will also add a “noindex, nofollow” meta tag to your page headers, instructing robots and crawlers to keep the page out of search engine results and not to follow any links on the page.

When and why to exclude content from search

Use this option to keep content out of public search. Perhaps you have content that you want to make available to certain visitors who possess the URL, but that you don’t want widely searchable by the broader public. You might also use it for backend workflows, like administrative pages, log-in forms, or internal search results, since they provide low value to public users. You may also want to exclude pages that provide information available in multiple locations on your site to avoid duplicate content.

How to exclude content from search

This feature is available to Site Managers only. When editing a page, simply select the option at the bottom of the page before saving.

Note: It's also possible to permanently or temporarily block search engines from your entire site without affecting on-site search.
